Western Backroads

Welcome to Virgil and Marcia's blog. We take many weekend trips to places in Arizona and the Southwest. This is a place where family and friends can read about where we've been and what we've seen. Enjoy!

Woo hoo, Cabela's!

They just opened a new Cabela's in Arizona. We went there the second weekend they were open and went back just last Saturday. Between shopping, they have so many different rooms with animals from local species in Arizona to African elephants and rhinosaurus. They also have a large mountain in the rear of the store, a gun collection room, and a 40,000 gallon fish tank.

2 posts down, 5 to go!!!

by Virgil

Dave and Kathy were at our house today and Dave wanted to test out his new Hi-Lift jack that he bought for his Jeep. Well, we got it into the backyard and used some scrap wood and a 5 foot long 2x2 inch piece of solid metal that the previous owners left in the garage to pull out two of the post footings from the pig fence. I originally ripped the fence out when we first moved in, but since the ground is rock solid, I hadn't had any luck at digging these out yet. We got two done, but it's going to take more energy and another day to finish the others. They are HUGE!!! Each was filled in with a 2 foot deep by 2 foot wide chunk of concrete. Each one has to be 100-200 pounds each. Now that we got them out, I'm also not sure how we are going to haul them to the dump.

Edit: I did a search online and found that concrete weighs approximately 100-150 pounds per cubic foot. That would make each post footing we dug out at least 300 and maybe up to 500 pounds or more.

What have we been doing lately?

Well, we've been working on fixing up our house in the last month. We painted all of the trim in the living room, dining room, kitchen, and guest bath with a fresh coat of white. Then, we painted the walls in all 4 rooms including the hallway.
