Western Backroads

Welcome to Virgil and Marcia's blog. We take many weekend trips to places in Arizona and the Southwest. This is a place where family and friends can read about where we've been and what we've seen. Enjoy!

Watson Lake on Canoe

Dave and Kathy bought new kayaks, so we packed up the campers and headed up to Prescott for the weekend. After getting setup at the campground at Lynx Lake, we headed just north of Prescott to Watson Lake. While the Armentrouts were unloading their kayaks, Marcia and I rented a canoe from the vendor at the boat ramp.

Since we moved to Arizona, we've been to this lake many times. You can see why we like it from the photos below. The granite boulders that make up the area surrounding the lake are amazing and it seems there are always white, puffy clouds in the sky. Due to rains recently, the water level was the highest we have ever seen it, which made good for exploring the lake by boat.

Photo out onto the lake before we launch.

Here is Marcia in the front of the canoe. About this time she was trying to figure out why it was so hard to keep it moving. Maybe Virgil should put the camera away and help. Even when I wasn't goofing around with the camera, we did have a difficult time paddling the boat around. You really have to work as a team to not be pulling against each other. There was a fairly swift wind on the lake and that caused for some tough waves to overcome. Dave and Kathy had a much easier time getting around since their kayaks don’t sit as low into the water.

Dave and Kathy waiting around for us to catch up.

After we got back, Marcia took a spin on one of the kayaks to see how she likes it. We almost lost her because she went out so far. The kayaks proved to be much easier to maneuver than the canoe.

New Camper

We bought a new camper about a week ago, and brought it home this past Saturday. It is a 2006 Forest River Flagstaff pop-up camper. We liked it because it is one of the smaller ones you can buy, and it has a toilet and shower. Most trailers this size don't have toilets or showers. It has a double bed on one end, and a queen on the other. It has a little gas grill that hooks onto the outside. Also has a heater, refrigerator, hot water heater, and electric brakes. Here are some photos I took of it while we had it up on Sunday.

This is where the toilet/shower are. Not such a great shot, but you get the idea. The aluminum square hooks to the ceiling and the curtain encloses the area. Posted by Picasa

This gas grill is connected to a gas line that comes out of the camper wall just behind it. It runs off the mail LP tank for the camper. Posted by Picasa
