Western Backroads

Welcome to Virgil and Marcia's blog. We take many weekend trips to places in Arizona and the Southwest. This is a place where family and friends can read about where we've been and what we've seen. Enjoy!

Landscaping and Painting

I haven't posted in a couple weeks, but here's an update on what we have been doing. We have a list of jobs we wanted to get done in the next month so we can have weekends free for camping and other things this spring.

We finally got the post footings from the old fence loaded onto the trailer and hauled them off to the dump. I still don't know how much those weighed, but it was all we could do to get them onto the trailer. This was the first time we had been to the dump in Phoenix. You weigh on the way in and then pull around to a large building with many garage doors. They tell you which one to back into and then you can unload and leave as soon as you are done. They have huge machines that push the garbage off into piles in the background. Here's a picture right after getting them loaded.

In this next picture, you can see me struggling to get the footing off the trailer. At least it was easier than loading them. You can also see the huge front end loader they used to for pushing things around in the back.

Ahh, we got them all unloaded in the next picture. I just rolled them off the back of the trailer and you can see where it just smashed and bent the metal sticking out of the top. Have I told you how heavy those things were yet?

With Marcia off work for the last couple weeks, I've been putting her to work. One thing she did was paint the block fence.

With some of the recent rain making the ground softer, she also has been out digging the red dirt away from the front of the house. With that, we also removed three bushes from the front and got two of the stumps dug out already. Here's a pile of the dirt on the side of the house where I'm going to make a raised garden and what the front looks like now.

Last weekend it took us a long time to paint the dark brown on the trim of the shed. We got all that coated and this week Marcia painted the main color on the shed. It's now finished on the outside and just needs the electrical run to it.
